CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE AND R+D
Tenerife’s natural conditions, due to its differentiated climatic and natural environment, its biodiversity and the astronomical quality of the sky, together with the availability of state-of-the-art scientific and research infrastructures, make the island a “laboratory of new technologies and innovation” exportable anywhere in the world.
Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics
The Canary Islands Government aims for 45% of its electricity demand in 2025 to come from renewable sources. Investments over the past year have made it possible for 30% of the total energy consumed in the Canary Islands to come from renewable sources, with Tenerife contributing nearly 40% of that generation. This progress is driven by advances in efficiency, improvements in the transmission network, energy storage systems, and interconnections between islands to strengthen the existing grids.
IAC
The IAC is an internationally recognized Spanish research center, selected by the Spanish Government as a “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence.” It focuses on astrophysical research, the development of scientific instrumentation related to astronomy, and the training of research personnel. The participation of institutions from various countries is coordinated through an International Scientific Committee (CCI). The exceptional quality of the Canary Islands’ skies for astronomical observation is protected by law.
INVOLCAN
Due to its geographical location and terrain, Tenerife is also an important field for the study of volcanic activity. It is home to the National Volcanology Center, or Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), whose purpose is to contribute to improving volcanic risk management and to the sustainable development of the Canary Islands and other volcanic regions.
CIBICAN
In the field of Health Sciences and Biomedicine, significant research activity is also carried out, with leading institutions such as the Canary Islands Biomedical Research Center (CIBICAN) and the University Institute of Tropical Diseases.
