Let's talk

A Finnish company is transferring its staff to Tenerife in search of sunshine

The My Place Co-Working Centre in La Orotava was the location selected by Yousician, a digital tutor for learning to play musical instruments. Forty members of staff spent a month on the Island and went trekking and took part in many other activities

A technology company from Finland transferred its staff to Tenerife for a month fleeing from the darkness and the low temperatures at its headquarters in search of the Island’s ideal climate.

The company is Yousician, which has a website where you can learn to play musical instruments, and from its staff of sixty workers, a total of forty spent several weeks on Tenerife, to be exact at the My Place Co-Working Centre, located on the San Jerónimo Industrial Estate in La Orotava.

During the winter, when “it is very cold in Finland and there is little daylight”, with temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius, a large part of the staff transferred their workplaces to a much sunnier place, as the coordinator, Pauliina Myllynta, said.

The previous destination was Thailand but on Tenerife they found better working conditions: a more reliable internet connection and a location with first world infrastructure. “The objective is to increase productivity and motivation during the period when Helsinki is immersed in darkness. A reliable internet connection was basic”, said Andrew Kolokolnikov, head of the section of the company which runs the virtual music school.

One of the particular characteristics of this company is that it is like a United Nations of technology. Thus, the nearly forty employees who came to Tenerife are of twenty different nationalities. “We are enchanted by the experience of coming to Tenerife, not only because of the climate but also the exceptional natural spots and the many options available for adventure sports on free days” said Kolokolnikov.

And the fact it that the people that Yousician sent have been able to try hill-walking, kayaking and boat trips to see the whales and dolphins… Another of the aspects which the company leaders emphasise is the cuisine, which was in general very popular with the engineers, designers and other staff who came to Tenerife halfway through last month. Some people even took advantage of the opportunity to get to know other islands..

“It`s a very gratifying experience so its very likely that we will come back some time because here we have everything we look for”, said Kolokolnikov.

Two bass sounds from the second floor indicate the space where the Finns both work out the algorithms of the applications and write educational programmes which help people to learn to play musical instruments simply.

GuitarTuna is one of Yousician’s projects. This company has an application, available at yousician.com (Windows and Mac), created so that we can have our own private music teacher at home. Created in 2010, this Finnish company spends a lot of time creating apps and games for those who are learning music and with this platform they really want to entice those who are concentrating on the guitar.

The team on Tenerife are working in close collaboration with their colleagues in Finland. For that purpose, reliable and rapid access to the internet is of great importance. And in that regard, the Island has not failed this company which has achieved what it set out to find: sun, an exotic environment and unbeatable conditions to improve productivity.
